President's Award for Collegiate Journalism
and $1,000 Scholarship

INFORMATION 

The President of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee presents this award to a candidate who has shown sustained excellence as a student journalist. Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements outlined below. A panel of at least three judges will select the awardee by unanimous vote based on: overall quality of entries; breadth and scope of work; and the essay. A scholarship of $1,000 accompanies this award.

 

ENTRIES

All entries must be the candidate’s work and must have been published while the candidate served as a student journalist. Any combination of entries is acceptable, but the total number must not exceed 10 from the following categories combined:

Copy:       All stories must be typed (tear sheets and copies accepted)
Photos:    All prints are to be as close as possible to 8 x 10 inches, cropped as published, and encased in non-glare document protectors.
Design:    Both page and double-page spread designs (newspaper and yearbook) will be accepted.

 

CRITERIA

The candidate must meet the following academic criteria at the time the application is submitted:
- Enrolled in college at least part-time during the Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 semesters.
- Serving on the staff of a student publication.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

 

APPLICATION 

The entry for this award is a student-compiled notebook:
 
  • Three-ring binder.
  • Cover letter to include (in this order): the student's name, home address, home phone, e-mail address, school, and name of adviser/sponsor (with telephone number and e-mail address preferred).
  • Table of Contents listing each entry.
  • Entries clearly labeled with publication and date.
  • Essay: two pages (maximum) -- typed, double-space, 1 inch margins, not less than 11 point font. Essay should cover journalism career goals, and a statement on why he/she should receive the award and integrate how faith plays a role in the candidate’s journalism pursuits.
  • Copy of the student's transcript or verification of cumulative GPA.
  • Adviser/Sponsor Verification Form (Attached).
 

DEADLINE    

Entry must be postmarked no later than September 12, 2010.
